Search Engine Optimization: Optimize Your Website – Outrank Your Competitors – Get More Visitors!

SEO – Interlink Between Your Content Related Websites

Posted on | October 7, 2010 | No Comments

A great way to work on your seo is to use any other websites you own to interlink to one another. This is especially important if they cover common areas and don’t forget to link from your blogs, social media pages and your own online signatures on forum sites!

However, before you rush off and begin firing links up all over the place , consider this: what is really important in terms of link juice is that you don’t just link your websites together for the sake of it. Only interlink if they actually share a common theme or if it’s appropriate to do so.

For example, say like me, you run a parenting website and an seo website. Although you may want to interlink between them to benefit from the higher ranking site’s position in Google, it makes sense to avoid this as the search engine spiders will likely get suspicious and say, hey what have these two sites got in common? Nothing, except for the fact they’re run from the same IP address and owned by the same person. Well then, that’s why they’re interlinking. Let’s ignore that link structure because it’s an obvious ploy to raise the profile of the new site!

However, let’s say my parenting website links to my parenting blog and vice versa. The search engine spiders look at the linking structure and say, hey, these sites both mention related topics which are useful to one another. Yes, they’re maybe run by the same person but they’re on topic so that’s fine. We’re happy to share the link juice!

You see, that’s the difference with interlinking between sites. If they share a common ground your sites will benefit from the interlinking. If not, then it’s less likely that they’ll benefit just so much. And, just while we’re on the topic, if you don’t run a blog alongside your website, then what are you waiting for – doesn’t the above information show you just how beneficial it can be?

SEO – Increasing Your Website’s Page Views

Posted on | September 30, 2010 | 1 Comment

Part of your seo strategy should  include working on increasing the page views on your website.

By enticing your visitors to stay on your site for longer and encouraging them to visit other pages,  you can increase the total pageviews your site gets. This shows the search engine robots that you have a lot of relevant interlinking content – and the longer people stay on your site the more the robots rate it!

In addition to this, individual advertisers also like to know how many page views your site gets so they can decide whether or not to buy advertising space off you if you are selling advertising space privately or through a middle man.

But how should you go about increasing the pageviews that your site attracts?

This is where you need to do a little bit of research. By checking the most popular pages on your site using a tool such as Google Analytics or even just your website’s hosting company, you can start to work straight away on getting your visitors to look at other pages on your site. You can subtly, or directly point them towards other pages on your site that may interest them based on the page they are visiting. In many instances all it takes is just adding a small section to your page suggesting other similar pages. Alternatively, you can insert a small piece of code into your html which will automatically direct visitors to similar pages that they may enjoy.

Another tip to increase the pageviews on your site is to use a keyword research tool and to write articles or include content based on what people are searching for. By undertaking your keyword searches carefully, you can add lots of useful content to your site that can be easily linked together. Because all the content on each of the new pages is inter-linked, the search engine spiders will be satisfied that your site has lots of relevant and useful content and this will be further backed up by the increasing page views your site will begin to attract.

Increasing your pageviews can be easily achieved, although it may seem a little daunting initially. However, if you put a little effort into it regularly, it won’t be long before you start to see your page view statistics rise, and with that you should also begin to see more visitors and more revenue as a result!

SEO – Include Images on Your Website’s Pages

Posted on | September 28, 2010 | No Comments

One of the best things you can do to in terms of your website’s seo strategy is to include images wherever possible throughout your website.

However, it’s not enough to just include any old image. You must include relevant images and each of these must be labelled with an appropriate alt tag in its meta data so that search engine spiders know the content of  each image.

But where do the images come from? Many webmasters purchase suitable images from a selection of professional photography websites. Alternatively, if preferred, images can also be obtained from photo sharing websites in return for a link identifying the photographer. If neither of these options applies to you, you can create and edit your own images using specialised photography programmes such as Adobe Photoshop.

If you concentrate on creating or purchasing images for use on your site, it means they will show up for image searches in addition to information searches and basically means that for every page on your website you are benefiting twice over!

SEO – Get Links from High Page Rank Sites

Posted on | September 22, 2010 | No Comments

When working on your search engine optimization strategy, one very useful approach you should try is to get links to your website from other websites with a high page rank. Some of their page rank will help to  influence the rating of your site and help get it noticed by the search engines.

Many webmasters haven’t a clue how to do this and often send out random, spam-like emails asking for reciprocal links. Whilst this type of linking can be beneficial if both sites are similar in some way, it certainly isn’t such a good idea if the two sites have nothing at all in common with one another!

The best way to get links back from higher ranking sites is to either personally submit unique well-written content to the sites you would like backlinks from or use an article distribution service to distribute it for you. Alternatively, you can use press release services to spread the word about something newsworthy in your business. Press releases can be a fantastic way to get your product or services noticed and your content will end up all over the web on topic-related sites. This pleases search engines as they see lots of sites linking back to you and they know that this means you have good content and that your content is both appropriate and useful.

Research several press release services before deciding on which best serves your requirements. Some offer free press releases, whereas others also offer seo services and send your releases to select groups of people who have opted in to receive specific type of information.

Other ways to obtain links from high ranking sites include listing your website on various website directories and submitting it to various search engines.

Over time, by taking the right approach and by doing a little bit of careful research, you will soon find some high quality backlinks coming your way!

SEO – Focus, Focus, Focus!

Posted on | September 21, 2010 | No Comments

Keeping focused on your website content is vital when you are running an online business. Search engines like Google and Yahoo are looking all the time to check that your content is what they would expect at your website but more importantly, return visitors simply won’t return if you being to lose focus.

Of course, sometimes you may simply find yourself getting bored if you’re writing about the same topics over and over again. However, all is not lost; this can be a great excuse for hiring professional content writers (if you can afford to!) or inviting other people to contribute to your website in return for links back to theirs. Whilst there is absolutely nothing wrong with this approach, and indeed it can add a freshness to your site, be careful that you only ever invite or accept invitations by people who are as particular as you are about your content.

Why? Well, if they don’t take as much care as you do when it comes to spelling, grammar and punctuation, they lose focus halfway through an article, or they make clumsy mistakes in their writing, it will reflect badly on you. Again, you may end up losing your own precious visitors rather than gaining new ones!

Alternatively, rather than allowing other contributors, you can always carefully move your content into a different but related area. For example, on my first website, BreastfeedingMums.com, I wrote amble articles about breastfeeding because at that point in time, I was a breastfeeding mum. However, as time went by I began to realise I hadn’t much left to say on the topic and my interests were moving in other directions. I knew it was time to make some changes to the site, so introduced a pregnancy section. It was a smart move, because obviously many breastfeeding mothers, particularly first-timers, at some point will consider pregnancy again! It worked and I gained far more visitors as a result.

When I tired of writing about pregnancy, I created other sections and wrote about cord blood donation, birth injuries and general family health considerations which opened up health and life insurance! Everything still looks cohesive on the site and it is still gaining visitors! By thinking about and taking care of the direction in which I moved the website, I kept the search engines and my visitors happy; I also kept myself motivated and energised to keep writing!

When you are writing online, either for yourself or for others, keep your sentences relatively short and split your paragraphs up more so than you would if you were writing on paper. People don’t read words on a screen in the same way that they do on a page. Rather, they tend to scan the page looking for whatever it is that they were searching for in the first place. Short, sharp, succinct online information is what they after rather than long rambling essays!

Focus that content and if you feel yourself beginning to ramble, STOP! – It’s time to move onto the next article.

SEO – Utilise your Title Tag to Entice Visitors

Posted on | September 20, 2010 | 2 Comments

The title tag of your page is an important little device that few webmasters take the time to experiment with. Aside from being the first line of text that search engines like Google display in their search listings, it also appears at the top of each of your web pages. How many times have you visited a site and noticed the word “Untitled” at the very top of the web page? It’s not very inspiring, is it?

Worse still, if you haven’t edited your title tag, then it’s highly unlikely that that particular page will ever show up in any searches your potential visitors make – so if you don’t have a search engine friendly title tag on  your page, you’re pretty much turning away the very people who are trying to find you and the products/articles they want.

By implementing a considered title tag into every single page of your website, you can make each of your webpages much more seo friendly. You can also entice visitors to visit your site by the use of appropriate keywords and catchy phrases in your Title tag; one way to do this is by asking them a question which you know they want the answer to, or by using a punchy sentence! After all, there’s not much point in your site appearing on the first page of the search results if people still ignore it. You have to capture their attention in a split second and the title tag is the perfect place to do this!

Use a fresh title tag on each page of your site – this should be unique to each individual page and tells both the search engines and your visitors what to expect if they visit that page! A common mistake many webmasters make is to use the same keywords or sentences in every single title tag across their site. This can look like duplicate content and actually harm your site as the search engines tend to see this approach as  spammy. Therefore, it’s worth your while to take your time to get your title tags right first time around.

If you are using a programme such as Adobe Dreamweaver to write your webpages, then you can add your title tags either by going into the code view and looking for the “Title” at the top of the code and adding your thoughtfully composed text there. Alternatively, you can add it to a little information box in the WYSIWYG editor.

If you are using a blog platform, the title tag is often added automatically and will contain the same wording as the title of your page or post.

SEO – Write for Your Readers, Not for Keyword Density!

Posted on | September 20, 2010 | No Comments

Whilst keywords are undoubtedly extremely important to your website’s campaign, they are not the be all and end all. That’s why you’ll hear the following phrase time and again; write for your readers, not for the keywords! If it sounds contrived, it is. Your visitors won’t like it and will simply leave your site muttering to themselves that they’ll not be back.

Yes, keywords are important, yes keyword density is important, but the most important thing of all is that you don’t offend your visitors! How many times have you made a search, clicked on a promising website, only to find it’s so jam-packed with the same words and phrases over and over again that you simply click the back button? And afterwards, how do you feel?

Personally, I feel frustrated that I’ve wasted precious time on that website. I also feel that they must be some sort of a spammy outfit and there’s no way I’d ever wittingly give the people behind it my credit card details!

So, keep your visitors in mind at all times. Show them that they come first and don’t bore them with the same stuff time and again. Use keywords with caution – otherwise your visitors will be running for the hills!

SEO – Choosing Keywords and Key Phrases

Posted on | September 19, 2010 | No Comments

When working on search engine optimisation (seo), whether it’s for your own website or for that of  a customer, it’s important to carefully research the keywords and key phrases that you want the site to show up for in the results pages.

Unfortunately many businesses appear to pick their keywords out of thin air, without giving any thought at all as to what their site’s potential visitors may be looking for. For example, the site sells silver jewellery so on every page they mention silver jewellery without specifying anything unique about their product. Are they selling random silver jewellery, or is it handcrafted? Does it have specific links to a region, such as a handcrafted sterling silver claddagh ring? Or is it specific to a certain group of people, such as silver baby baptism bracelets?

Once you understand the importance of choosing your keywords and phrases, it’s actually very easy to choose those that people are searching for. In fact, you can use specialist keyword programmes to help you decide which words and phrases to optimise your website for, or you can use one of the many free and very reliable keyword tools that are available online.

So, when deciding on each page of your website, think about what it is that you are trying to rank highly for. (Remember, the higher you rank, the more visitors you will get to your website!) What are you selling? What is special about the article or product that you are marketing? Think about what people are searching for and then use those searches to help you with your choice of keywords and key phrases.

Why Bother with SEO?

Posted on | September 18, 2010 | No Comments

Perhaps one of the biggest mistakes any new website owner can make is to have their website designed and uploaded to the web and then to sit back and wait for things to happen! It doesn’t work like that, unfortunately. The wisest thing you can do is to learn as much as you can about search engine optimization and then to apply everything you’ve learnt about it to your own site.

But, perhaps, like many webmasters you’re wondering why you need to bother with search engine optimization at all?

Well, it’s a well known fact that the world wide web is growing rapidly. With growth comes more competition for you and your business. It’s also well known that most people rarely search beyond the first page of results that they are presented with. In fact, unless your website appears in the first three or four results on the very first page, then very few people will click through to your website.

Now obviously, not everyone can be number 1 on Google, but optimise your website for a few key search terms and you can improve your chances dramatically. That’s basically why you need to learn about seo!

You’ll probably be contacted by a multitude of seo companies offering to do the job for you, but they are extremely expensive and at this point in time you most likely need to spend less rather than more. In fact, learning about seo can be extremely rewarding in more ways than one and if you can do the work yourself you’ll constantly be able to update your pages and apply the latest changes at your own pace.

There are many excellent seo books and online seo resources so it can be well worth your while ploughing through some of them to learn as much as you can about seo.
